this article is honestly getting me emotional. carl’s starter has been around since at least 1847, and when he died in 2000 nobody in his family wanted to continue nourishing and distributing his historical sourdough starter. as a result, 10 people from a sourdough usenet group started an organization dedicated to nurturing and distributing the sourdough starter. the organization is called the 1847 Oregon Trail Sourdough Starter Preservation Society, aka “Carl’s Friends.”
